On April 14th 2016, The Kirkella celebrated her first birthday and what a year it’s been.
When she was launched last year by UK Fisheries Ltd, based in Hull, we were delighted to learn the majestic ship – which measures 86.1 metres in length and weighs an impressive 4290 tonnes – would be delivering the finest Frozen at Sea Cod and Haddock exclusively to Wraggs and Collins.
Featuring advanced freezing techniques maximising quality and freshness of the fish, The Kirkella hoped to overturn the misconception that large vessels are environmentally unsustainable. During this last year, she has done this by catching cod and small bycatches of haddock using special equipment to ensure the bycatch of smaller fish is kept to a minimum.
The Kirkella is certainly revolutionising the way our fish and chips make it from the sea to our table and a huge 95% of her catch is bought and consumed in Britain, mainly via fish and chip shops.
What has she actually got up to since she first set sail?
Over the past 12 months, The Kirkella has…
Delivered 2,881 tonnes of product in total approx. 95% Cod
Travelled 30,000 nautical miles
Spent 298 days at sea
Supplied hundreds of fish and chip shops across the North East, Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
The Kirkella is currently out in the Norwegian fishing grounds and from the success of the last 12 months, we can safely say she is going to be making waves for many years to come, providing world class, sustainable fishing and ensuring British families enjoy the very best Frozen at Sea fish.
